Sophie and the Imogene Nation Bandit is an unapologetically unrealistic adventure story about a manic depressive seamstress who, after landing in a mental hospital thanks to a colossal bully, resolves to become a clothing designer. Her tough mother helps her acquire fabric and materials, and her new friend blesses her with a retired but functioning sewing machine. From there it unfolds into a caper complete with a terrible day job–and then a wonderful day job, friendship, a mystery, a scary villainess, rags to riches satisfaction, and love.
